Derek Madsen
Executive Vice President of Resource Development
I believe that a home is the foundation of success for any individual or family. Having a safe, stable place to live allows each of us the opportunity to thrive.
Derek works with the Executive and Resource Development teams to maintain CommonBond’s culture of philanthropy. Along with a dedicated group of staff and volunteers, he connects donors to our mission and helps demonstrate the many ways that their gifts make our work possible. Derek leads the strategy, planning, and execution of philanthropic and impact investing activities. He also ensures effective marketing and communications efforts for the organization. Derek brings a mix of experience in executive leadership, volunteer and donor cultivation, partnership development, and the creation of human service and youth intervention programs.
The belief that a home is the foundation of success is informed by Derek’s early experiences in working with teens experiencing homelessness. As a caseworker, program director, and executive with the YMCA, he worked closely with youth in need across the community. Throughout his career, Derek has worked with donors at all levels. His background also includes core program work, executive experience, and completion of the Masters of Nonprofit Management program at Hamline University.
Derek believes affordable housing is the most pressing issue our community faces. We know the current need for housing is not being met and is expected to grow in the coming years. A lack of a safe and stable home undercuts youth opportunity in education, proper social-emotional development, creates gaps in our workforce, spurs decreased civic engagement, and so much more. He works at CommonBond because it is the organization best positioned to lead on the issue of creating homes – the basis of vibrant communities.
Favorite room in my house:
Our kitchen. Whether over pancakes on a Sunday morning or dinner as everyone’s day is coming to a close, this is the place our family gathers to connect, nourish body and spirit, and show our care for one another.
