The Hope of Community

Please share a little about yourself and your background.
I worked in the non-profit sector my entire career, last serving as the president of the Saint Paul and Minnesota Foundation. Having grown up in a family with modest means, I feel privileged that I was able to work in philanthropy my entire career and witness the good that comes from generosity.
How long have you been a supporter of CommonBond?
I first became aware of CommonBond through a book club friend who worked there, but I gained more understanding and respect for their work reviewing grant requests from them in the mid-2000s. Later, I was invited to serve on the Board, was part of the search committee that hired Deidre Schmidt, and served as Board Chair.
What part of CommonBond’s mission means the most to you?
I’ve always been impressed that CommonBond provides people with homes – not just places to rent – as well as Advantage Services that help the residents gain skills and navigate life challenges.
Why did you decide to invest in the Framing the Future campaign?
I knew the need for affordable housing far exceeds the availability. When I heard how well the campaign was doing, I wanted to join the leaders who had stepped forward to accomplish ambitious goals for affordable housing.
Why does CommonBond’s work matter?
CommonBond gives people hope, treats them with dignity, and includes them in the community.
"Rapid-fire" Questions
What is your favorite room in your home?
The living room – where I hang with my husband and two Golden Doodles, read, and watch TV.
Who are your role models? Who inspires you?
I’m mostly retired, and many of the people who inspire me these days are also retired. I could name 10 to 12 people easily, probably more, who are giving significant time as volunteers to be part of solving problems and meeting community challenges head on. Unlike when they were working, they have more time to show up and are doing just that – with energy, optimism, and interest in making the world a better place.
What does home mean to you?
It is a safe place to be with loved ones.
