My name is Fekri, and I want to tell you my story. When I emigrated from Ethiopia in 2006 and moved to a brand-new country, it brought up a lot of emotions for me. I felt overwhelmed with all the new things I had to learn like the language, culture, and the overall unfamiliar nature of everything around me.
I was grateful to be able to move into Seward Tower West, a CommonBond community in South Minneapolis. While living there for over a decade, my family and I built a strong foundation that has allowed us to flourish and achieve the goals we set for ourselves.
While I was living at Seward Tower West, through Advantage Services I was able to earn my GED, complete maintenance training, and find a job at a nearby property. Later on I studied accounting at Saint Paul College, volunteered weekly with Advantage Services, and took part in a CommonBond internship, all while helping to raise our three children. None of this would have been possible without CommonBond.
Having a safe, stable home was key to my success and ability to build a career and provide for my family and our future. I hope you’ll consider donating today so more families like mine can succeed.
When I came to the United States, I never could have imagined being a homeowner, completing my education, or having a job that I love. As a father, I have always wanted my kids to have opportunities that I did not have growing up – and thanks to CommonBond, they do.
Through Study Buddies and Homework Center, they received tutoring, mentorship, and support with their classwork from staff and volunteers. Advantage Services has helped my entire family get where we are today.
Now I am a CommonBond property manager, and I am proud to support residents in the same way I was supported when I first arrived in the United States. Whether it’s welcoming a newcomer to the country as I was welcomed, coordinating a community activity, or connecting residents to resources, I am fulfilled by my work.
At CommonBond, residents come first. Everyone comes from different backgrounds and places in life, but one thing we all have in common is the need to have a home, to be safe, and to be treated with dignity. CommonBond’s mission changed my life, and I get to see it changing residents’ lives every day.
When making your end of year gift, I encourage you to think about how different your life might have been with or without a safe, stable home.
I know you believe in CommonBond’s mission to build stable homes, strong futures, and vibrant communities. Without you, we would not be able to help the nearly 13,000 residents who call a CommonBond community home. Thank you for your continued generosity and investment in our future.
With Gratitude,
Fekri
