October Decade Reflection: Featuring the 1990s

The ‘70s and ‘80s brought many challenges our way, but also resulted in growth, strength...and many name changes! During the ‘90s, we officially became CommonBond Communities. We also gave our resident services programs a name—Advantage Centers—coined by residents at Yorkdale Townhomes in Edina.

Preservation of affordable housing was a priority during this decade, with many older communities at risk of losing affordable housing status. CommonBond and other community partners acquired Seward Towers and were able to preserve 640 units of affordable housing!

In Saint Paul, we joined with two private developers to preserve the Selby-Dayton Apartments, which became Cathedral Hill Homes. This 1999 initiative created 60 apartments for large families, preserved the subsidies and showed that affordable housing could work in an upscale neighborhood.
